Limestone has been of great importance in Pargas since the 14th century. In the museum you will learn about the handling of limestone and cement, as well as the extent of social work and leisure events that were organized and maintained by the Limestone company. Pargas Kalkbergs Aktiebolag was founded in 1898.

One of the rooms in the Industrial Museum is furnished like the executive director Emils Sarlin’s office. He was one of the most prominent individuals behind limestone quarrying in Pargas.

In the other museum building you can visit the geological exhibit “2000 million years”. In the exhibition visitors are taken on a journey far back in time, during which you get to know about the origins of the limestone. Finland and bedrock under Pargas are the result of long periods of its geological development. At times Finland has been situated at latitudes with radically different climates than those of today. The volcanic rocks and limestone bear witness to tropical seas and active volcanoes. In words and pictures, it is shown how, where and when the limestone has been formed.
